Our Culture
Kaska Dena are a matriarchal society comprised of two clans wolf and crow. Traditionally we were a nomadic nation travelling across our 100,000 square km traditional territory to hunt and trap and trade with neighboring Nations. We are still a nomadic nation as our communities are located in remote areas of British Columbia and Yukon. Our community members continue to follow our seasons and hunt and gather as we did historically. If jobs are scarce our members leave in search of employment or work in remote areas of our traditional territory. We are close knit communities with many inter-related families, whether it is birth, marriage or death, we all celebrate and grieve the events. We value our land and water and our Kaska organizations have been working hard to ensure these are clean and protected for our future generations.
